Hong Kong and Macau environmental agreement signed (with photos)

     The Environmental Protection Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region signed the Hong Kong - Macao Environmental Protection Co-operation Agreement with the Environmental Protection Bureau of the Macau Special Administrative Region today (October 26) to strengthen exchanges and collaboration in various areas of environmental protection with Macau.

     Witnessed by the Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, the Agreement was signed by the Permanent Secretary for the Environment/Director of Environmental Protection, Mr Donald Tong, and the Director of the Macau Environmental Protection Bureau, Mr Raymond Tam.

     The Agreement covers major areas of environmental co-operation between Hong Kong and Macau, including air pollution control, environmental impact assessment, waste management, sewage management, environmental monitoring and research, environmental promotion and education, environmental training and exchanges, notification on major cross-boundary environmental incidents and environmental industry co-operation.

     The Agreement further strengthens environmental co-operation between the two cities, which has been in place since 2008 under the guidance of the annual Hong Kong - Macao Environmental Protection Co-operation Liaison Meeting.

     Mr Tong discussed with Mr Tam the progress of various environmental co-operation activities after the signing ceremony. Mr Tam was leading a Macau Special Administrative Region Government delegation to join the 11th Eco Expo Asia in Hong Kong. Mr Tong also took the opportunity to thank Mr Tam for Macau's participation in the Eco Expo Asia including setting up the Macau pavilion.
