******************************************************************************************
Hong Kong film director Mabel Cheung is attending the Asian Film Festival in Carpi, Italy, which is being held from October 11 to 16.

Twelve Hong Kong feature films and a series of short movies about Hong Kong are being screened at the event, with the support of the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office, Brussels (HKETO, Brussels) in association with the Hong Kong Arts Centre and the Hong Kong Film Development Council.

The Festival programme includes three films by Miss Cheung, namely The Soong Sisters, City of Glass and her latest movie, A Tale of Three Cities.

The Hong Kong film director arrived in Carpi on October 13 and is staying until October 16, when she will depart for Venice. In Venice, on October 17, she will be giving a presentation at Italy's famous Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, where she will tell students about Hong Kong's role as a leading film production centre and share her experience as a Hong Kong film director.

The Festival is also presenting a retrospective of six films by Stanley Kwan which offer an overview of his creative work, namely Love Unto Waste, Rouge, Full Moon in New York, Centre Stage, Red Rose, White Rose and Lan Yu.

Recent Hong Kong films on the programme are Wong Kwok-Fai's The Moment, Ringo Lam's Wild City and Christopher Doyle's Hong Kong Trilogy.

Speaking at a reception on October 13 attended by Miss Cheung before the screening of her film A Tale of Three Cities, the Deputy Representative of the HKETO, Brussels, Miss Alice Choi, said the HKETO, Brussels was delighted to support the Asian Film Festival in Carpi for the first time.

Miss Choi noted that the selection of Hong Kong films includes works by established Hong Kong directors as well as short films by newcomers to Hong Kong's vibrant film scene.

"Hong Kong movies have been, and are still, major and active players in the Asian film market, thanks to our tradition of being a place of open borders and open minds, where artistic freedom can flourish amidst a mix of Chinese and Western cultural influences," said Miss Choi, adding that while Hong Kong is small, it released 59 films last year.

"Hong Kong itself often plays a starring role in films. We continue to be a favourite location for overseas film makers, especially those from Hollywood. That's thanks, of course, to the look and feel of Hong Kong and its many East-meets-West location possibilities. It's also thanks to our post-production professionals, from special-effects creators to digital animators," she said.

Miss Choi also took the opportunity to visit the Emilia-Romagna Region, Italy, to renew contacts with local officials, business organisations and academics.
