SED visits San Francisco for education exchanges (with photos)
**************************************************************
The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (October 7, San Francisco time) arrived in San Francisco, the United States (US), for education exchanges, upon completion of the 6th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Education Ministerial Meeting in Peru.

Mr Ng first visited the Microsoft Technology Centre in Silicon Valley and met with its management to learn about the new developments of e-learning and innovation education.

Mr Ng was also shown a series of demonstrations on application of technology in education, such as wearable computers, motion tracking techniques and 3D printing.

Mr Ng then attended a gathering with some Hong Kong students and alumni of top universities in California, including four students benefiting from the Hong Kong Scholarship for Excellence Scheme (HKSES).

The HKSES awardees are currently studying in Stanford University and University of California, Berkeley, majoring in Mathematics, Physics and Political Economy.

Mr Ng listened to the students' sharing about their campus life and gave them words of encouragement. He also took the opportunity to invite them to come back to Hong Kong to pursue their career and serve the community after graduation.

Launched in 2014, the HKSES offers all awardees a non-means-tested scholarship to cover their tuition fees, subject to a ceiling of HK$250,000 per annum, whichever is lower. In addition, a means-tested bursary will be granted to students who may need additional support to pursue their studies, subject to a ceiling of HK$200,000 per student per annum.

There were 92 students awarded in the 2015/16 academic year, whereas 93 so far in 2016/17.

The HKSES is currently open for applications until December 31, 2016. Mr Ng suggested that eligible Hong Kong students who intend to pursue undergraduate or postgraduate studies at world-renowned universities outside Hong Kong starting from the 2017/18 academic year consider submitting application.

Accompanying Mr Ng on his visit to Peru and the US are the Administrative Assistant to the SED, Mr Edward Yu, and the Principal Education Officer (Quality Assurance and School-based Support), Miss Lau Kar-shin. They will return to Hong Kong this Sunday (October 9, Hong Kong time).
