Waste Reduction Begins with Waste Audit: HA partners with green groups to launch "Green Delight in Estates" Phase 10 community environmental education programme (with photo)
******************************************************************************************
The following is issued on behalf of the Hong Kong Housing Authority:

"Waste Reduction Begins with Waste Audit" is the theme of this year's "Green Delight in Estates" Phase 10 community environmental education programme in all public rental housing estates that the Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) has launched in partnership with The Conservancy Association, Friends of the Earth (HK) and the Business Environment Council.

Officiating at the ceremony to launch the new phase, the Permanent Secretary for Transport and Housing (Housing) cum Director of Housing, Mr Stanley Ying, said today (October 7) that the programme has raised the environmental awareness and participation of residents, and nurtured a green atmosphere in the public housing estates.

In the past nine phases, the HA collaborated with green groups to organise environmental activities with different themes, including a plastic bottle recycling campaign, plastic bag reduction, a waste separation promotion scheme, green living carnivals, talks and workshops on waste reduction, green visits, exchange of second-hand goods, quizzes and more. Around 22 000 residents and students have been trained as Green Estate Ambassadors to promote green messages and activities to other residents with a view to building a green and healthy living environment for the community.

Maintaining last year's target of Reduction of Municipal Waste, the "Green Delight in Estates" Phase 10 programme will include a large-scale campaign with the theme of "Waste Reduction Begins with Waste Audit" and a range of in-depth environmental education activities in HA's public rental housing estates this year. The activities aim to raise residents' awareness of waste reduction and recycling as well as to encourage them to reduce and save resources in their daily life.

Other officiating guests today included the Chief Executive of the Conservancy Association, Mr Ken So; the Governor of Friends of the Earth (HK), Mr James Wong; and the Chief Executive Officer of the Business Environment Council, Mrs Christine Cheung.
