"Smiling Stone" exhibition outlines human touch and distinctive local features in Ping Shek Estate (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
An exhibition entitled "The 6th Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme: Smiling Stone" is being held at the Gallery on the Kaitak Campus of the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University, from today (October 7) to November 27. Filled with elements of happiness and blessing, the exhibition captures stories and presents the architectural characteristics of Ping Shek Estate through paintings and sound and art installations.

As one of the selected proposals of the 6th Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme, the exhibition is curated by the project team 2Bliss comprising the participating artists Chan Chun-hing, Cheung Chin-hang and Cecilia Ho. Built in the 1970s, Ping Shek Estate looks as ordinary as stone, yet it is filled with an intense sense of community and humanity. By engaging the community in artwork creation, the participating artists have uncovered warm and affectionate stories of Ping Shek Estate and recorded its unique culture.

Chan Chun-hing has made use of the musical instruments and stereo equipment collected from Ping Shek Estate to create a sound installation. When visitors pass by the installation, parts of songs will be played, creating a unique symphony.

Cheung Chin-hang has expressed his perception of Ping Shek Estate through various media such as photography, ceramic stoneware and multimedia projections. His work provides visitors with a different kind of visual experience, allowing them to discover the unique and beautiful nature of the district.

Cecilia Ho learned about the life stories of some traditional shop owners and residents in Ping Shek Estate and has outlined the pursuit of dreams and love through 3D installation in a riot of colours.

The Artists in the Neighbourhood Scheme under the Art Promotion Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department supports local artists to go into the community and to promote visual arts. The works of about 200 artists have been showcased in different communities since the launch of the programme in 2000. In addition to promoting local art in the communities, the scheme emphasises the connection between contemporary art, local historical culture and humanity through the mutual creative process by the artists and local communities, which turns art and aesthetics into indispensable aspects of our daily lives.
