SED attends APEC Education Ministerial Meeting in Peru (with photos)

    The Secretary for Education (SED), Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (October 5, Lima time) attended the 6th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Education Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) in Lima, Peru.
 
    The AEMM is a large-scale event held once every four years to allow education ministers and senior officials of the 21 APEC economies to meet, exchange views and seek to enhance co-operation in education.
 
    With the general theme of "Inclusive and Quality Education", the 6th AEMM held its opening ceremony this morning. Education ministers and heads of delegations of the APEC economies met and exchanged views on the right of students to access a quality education that satisfies their basic learning needs and integrates their cultural diversity, procuring the development of their full potential. Also discussed was human capital development, exploring ways to lift competencies, accelerate innovation and increase employability.
 
     Mr Ng took the opportunity to hold bilateral meetings yesterday with the Head of the Australian delegation, Mr Adam Luckhurst; the Head of the Indonesian delegation, Dr Totok Suprayitno; the Head of the Vietnamese delegation, Dr Tran Anh Tuan; and the Minister of State, Ministry of Communications and Information and Ministry of Education of Singapore, Dr Janil Puthucheary, to exchange views on issues of mutual concern, such as free and quality kindergarten education, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education, vocational and professional education and training and the Qualifications Framework, as well as the Belt and Road Scholarship and the Sister School Scheme. They looked forward to further co-operation in these areas in the future.
 
    Tomorrow (October 6, Lima time), Mr Ng will give a thematic presentation on the achievements of education and curriculum reform in Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government's efforts in recent years to promote human capital development through a basket of initiatives including applied learning, business-school partnership, career and life planning education, vocational and professional education and training and post-secondary education to facilitate students' transition from education to work.
   
    Accompanying Mr Ng to attend the AEMM are the Administrative Assistant to the SED, Mr Edward Yu, and the Principal Education Officer (Quality Assurance and School-based Support), Miss Lau Kar-shin.
