SCS visits Companies Registry (with photos)

     The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, visited the Companies Registry today (October 6) to learn more about the work of the department and to take the opportunity to meet its staff.

     Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Thomas Chow, Mr Cheung first met with the Registrar of Companies, Ms Ada Chung, and the directorate staff. He noted that the major service areas of the Companies Registry include registering local and non-Hong Kong companies and statutory returns, de-registering defunct solvent companies, and providing the public with services and facilities for inspecting and obtaining company information.

     Mr Cheung then visited the Document Management Section of the Public Search Division, which is responsible for creating record documents received in hard copy form and converting the documents into digital images for further processing.

     Later, Mr Cheung visited the Company Formation and Enforcement Division to better understand how its staff process applications for the incorporation of local limited companies and registration of non-Hong Kong companies, and de-register defunct solvent companies. Mr Cheung was pleased to learn that apart from hard copy submissions, the public can also submit simultaneous applications for company incorporation and business registration electronically through a 24-hour portal "e-Registry". The New Companies Section on average this year handles some 12,000 applications for incorporation per month.

     When touring the Public Search Section, Mr Cheung was given a demonstration by frontline staff on how to assist the public to log on to the Cyber Search Centre for inspecting and obtaining company information. To facilitate business, the Companies Registry upgraded the Company Search Mobile Service in May this year to enable members of the public to conduct full-scale company searches using smartphones and mobile devices.

     Before concluding his visit, Mr Cheung met staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on issues of concern. He praised colleagues for their dedication and effort, and encouraged them to continue providing an efficient, cost-effective and quality service.
