SEN starts duty visit to Japan (with photos)

     The Secretary for the Environment, Mr Wong Kam-sing, today (September 12) began his itinerary in Tokyo, where he met with government officials and representatives of relevant organisations to learn about the environmental initiatives in Japan.

     In the morning, Mr Wong first met with the President of the Institute for Building Environment and Energy Conservation, Dr Shuzo Murakami, to understand the latest measures to enhance energy efficiency of buildings in Japan. They also exchanged views on strategies to promote green buildings and energy saving. He then paid a courtesy call to the Chinese Ambassador to Japan, Mr Cheng Yonghua.

     In the afternoon, Mr Wong met with the Special Advisor to the Governor on International Affairs of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government, Mr Hideaki Mizukoshi. He was briefed on the environmental policies and measures on various fronts, including the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games High-level Sustainability Plan, the action plan in response to climate change and related carbon reduction efforts, waste reduction policies, the conservation of biodiversity, and participation in coalitions of cities like the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group.

     Mr Wong later paid a courtesy call to the Minister of the Environment of Japan, Mr Koichi Yamamoto.

     Mr Wong will depart for Niigata Prefecture tomorrow (September 13) to continue his duty visit.
