Heritage Museum to hold "Hong Kong International Photo Festival 2016 - What Do You Want For Tomorrow?" exhibition (with photos)
******************************************************************************************
An exhibition entitled "Hong Kong International Photo Festival 2016 - What Do You Want For Tomorrow?" will be held at the Hong Kong Heritage Museum from tomorrow (August 10) to September 26.

Curated by Wong Wo-bik and Tang Ying-chi, the exhibition features the work of 12 artists from different genres and media, blending photographic elements with multimedia installations to push the boundaries of photography and show its multifaceted possibilities. While listening to artists' stories and viewing the light and shadow of images, visitors will be inspired to answer a question, "What do you want for tomorrow?" The exhibition aims to open a door for visitors to contemplate how photography filters into and influences contemporary art, and to prompt them to envision the future.

Most people believe that images taken by a camera are real. Artists employ real or fabricated images to explore the possibility of showing reality. Through videos and sound, Wong Wo-bik creates stories about yesterday and tomorrow, connecting life with art. Lam Yuk-lin appropriates images of collective memory and recreates an ancient pavilion with projection. Chu Wing-man stands in front of actual sites of urbanised landscape and uses light painting and light boxes to recreate the land and spaces from her childhood memory.

Apart from having a sceptical attitude to the realness of images, artists also see images positively. Gretchen So roams around Hong Kong and Kowloon to record changes in the landscape. Yiu Miu-lai portrays the family with photography and video, highlighting the relationship between parents and children. Yvonne Lo reveals the development of students under special education, inviting visitors to think about the stories behind the images.

Artists also try to use images to construct the idea of self and other people's views on self and self-consciousness. Using a video series to revolve around a dialogue between two people, Lam Wai-kit explores the conflicts encountered in life. Zoie So uses video and installation to express her thoughts about recent events in society and to stimulate self-reflection.

By integrating images with installations, 3D artwork can be created to show the real and virtual natures of images. Fiona Wong uses a machine to magnify the details of objects and transform them into projected images of physical and virtual reality, like shadows that follow forms. Interwoven with projected images, giant wire figures by Tang Ying-mui are hung upside down to create a complex space.

Photography can also be involved in painting. Cho Yeou-jui copies photos of nature in an objective manner by converting photographed images into paintings. Tang Ying-chi creates portraits of 108 ladies by copying from the projection of snapshots of figures.

The exhibition is a partnership project of the Hong Kong Heritage Museum and the Hong Kong Photographic Culture Association, and is one of the highlights of the Hong Kong International Photo Festival 2016.
