*****************************************************************
The names of the 289 validly nominated candidates for the 2016 Legislative Council General Election were gazetted today (August 5). The number for each candidate or list of candidates on the ballot papers, which was determined by drawing of lots, was also announced.

A total of 213 candidates who belong to 84 lists are validly nominated to compete for 35 seats in the five geographical constituencies.

For the functional constituency election, there are 55 validly nominated candidates (not including candidates of the District Council (second) functional constituency), and 43 of them will run for 18 seats in the functional constituencies.

A total of 21 candidates belonging to 9 lists are validly nominated to contest five seats in the District Council (second) functional constituency.

Twelve candidates in 10 functional constituencies will be returned to the Legislative Council uncontested. These constituencies are: Heung Yee Kuk, insurance, labour, real estate and construction, commercial (second), industrial (first), industrial (second), finance, import and export and District Council (first). About 6,400 electors in these functional constituencies do not have to vote.

"The Legislative Council Election will be held on September 4. A total of 571 ordinary polling stations and 24 dedicated polling stations across Hong Kong will be open on the polling day for registered electors of all geographical constituencies and the contested functional constituencies to cast their votes," a spokesman for the Registration and Electoral Office said.

"Of the 3,779,000-odd registered geographical constituency electors, about 3,473,000 electors can cast one vote each in their respective geographical constituency and the District Council (second) functional constituency. About 233,000 registered electors of the remaining 18 contested functional constituencies can vote for their respective functional constituency," he said.

The polling hours for the ordinary polling stations and the three dedicated polling stations set up at police stations will be from 7.30am to 10.30pm. For the 21 dedicated polling stations set up in penal institutions, for security reasons, the polling hours will be from 9am to 4pm.
