Hong Kong students shine at International Mathematical Olympiad 2016 (with photos)
**********************************************************************************
The Secretary for Education, Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim, today (July 15) congratulated six secondary students who represented Hong Kong at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) and obtained outstanding results with three gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze medal, having achieved the city's all-time record. Hong Kong was ranked among the top 10 in the IMO for the first time, coming 9th out of 109 participating country/region teams.

The gold medallists were Secondary Five student Yu Hoi-wai from La Salle College, Secondary Five student Lee Shun-ming from CNEC Christian College, and Grade 11 student John Michael Wu from Hong Kong International School. The silver medallists were Secondary Six student Cheung Wai-lam from Queen Elizabeth School and Grade 11 student Leung Yui-hin from Diocesan Boys' School. The bronze medallist was Secondary Five student Kwok Man-yi from Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School.

This year's IMO was held from July 9 to 16 in Hong Kong, with 602 contestants from 109 countries/regions and the addition of an observing country, making it the highest ever participation at an IMO. The contest was conducted at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). Activities were also arranged for the participants to learn about the local culture. The IMO aims to promote education in mathematics, strengthen interaction and co-operation among experts in mathematics worldwide, and train and inspire teenagers who possess great potential in mathematics.

Before officiating at the closing ceremony of the IMO this afternoon, Mr Ng met with and congratulated members of the Hong Kong team.

Mr Ng said, "The Hong Kong team's success achieved this year once again demonstrated the fruitful collaboration among the Education Bureau (EDB), the Hong Kong Academy for Gifted Education (HKAGE) and the International Mathematical Olympiad (Hong Kong) Committee (IMOHKC) in nurturing mathematically gifted local students. Members of the Hong Kong team, sent by the EDB, performed outstandingly in the 2015 Selection Contest and received nine months of training in a series of enhancement programmes jointly organised by the HKAGE and the IMOHKC.

"The remarkable performance of Hong Kong students in this year's IMO has indicated that we have students possessing immense potential in mathematics. Under the New Academic Structure, mathematics is a core subject for all senior secondary students. For those who want to learn more in-depth mathematics, they are encouraged by their schools to take the Extended Part (M1/M2) at the senior secondary level to stretch their potential in mathematics. In fact, all members of this year's Hong Kong team who are studying the New Senior Secondary Curriculum have actually opted for the modules of the Extended Part.

"Besides, as mathematics constitutes a solid foundation for science, technology, engineering and other disciplines, the EDB will continue to promote the implementation of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education to strengthen Hong Kong's competitiveness globally."

After the first hosting of IMO in 1994, Hong Kong once again hosted this prestigious international mathematics event this year. The IMOHKC is the organiser for the 57th IMO while the HKUST is the host university and the EDB serves as the supporting organisation. The success of the competition is attributed to the generous donations from various charities and the business sector as well as active support from the community including schools, teachers and students. Details of the competition are available at the IMOHKC’s website (www.imo2016.org) and designated Facebook page (zh-hk.facebook.com/imo2016).
