************************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

Regarding an earlier announcement of a cluster of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) cases in two wards (a medical ward and a mixed ward), the spokesperson for Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) made the following update today (July 6):

In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed active surveillance and contact tracing. Seven more male patients (aged 66 to 93) have been confirmed to have CRE. Two patients have already been discharged. Another patient had passed away due to his own underlying disease. The remaining four patients are still hospitalised under isolation in PYNEH, Ruttonjee Hospital and Tung Wah Eastern Hospital with stable condition.

Infection control measures have been stepped up according to the established guidelines in the wards. All other patients in the concerned wards are under close surveillance.

The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
