Update on cluster of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae cases in Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     Regarding an earlier announcement on a cluster of Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) cases in two wards (a medical ward and a mixed ward), the spokesperson of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital gave the following update today (July 5):

     In accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines, the hospital has performed active surveillance and contact tracing. Two more male patients (aged 66 and 90) have been confirmed to have CRE. One patient has already been discharged. Another patient is now hospitalised under isolation in Ruttonjee Hospital with stable condition.

     Infection control measures have been stepped up according to the established guidelines in the ward. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
