Space Museum launches new 3D Omnimax show "Journey to Space 3D" (with photos)
************************************************************

The Hong Kong Space Museum will launch a new 3D Omnimax show, "Journey to Space 3D", tomorrow (July 1).  The show takes a close look at the achievements and contributions of the United States' (US) Space Shuttle programme and introduces fascinating details about the upcoming human space journey to Mars.

Since 1981, US space shuttles have been carrying humans into space and back to Earth. Although the Space Shuttle programme ended in 2011, it contributed hugely towards human space exploration, completing over 100 missions including the setting up of the International Space Station and deployment of the Hubble Space Telescope.

Landing humans on Mars is the next big space mission. A single trip to Mars would take at least six months and astronauts would need to stay in a specially made spacecraft and environment to avoid deadly cosmic radiation. After landing on Mars, the astronauts will need to wear new type of spacesuit with high mobility in order to carry out their assignments. A space rover will also be required for moving across the rocky terrain in search of natural resources. All the equipment will need to be carried from Earth to Mars by a rocket launched from the Space Launch System, the most powerful rocket ever built.

"Journey to Space 3D" shows not only the "roadmap" to Mars, but will also give a glimpse of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)'s facilities to show how scientists and engineers are working to make the dream of landing on Mars come true.

The 42-minute show will be screened until December 31 at the museum's Stanley Ho Space Theatre. It will be screened daily at 2.40pm and 6.10pm. An additional show at 11.10am will be available on Sundays and public holidays. The museum is closed on Tuesdays (except public holidays). The two exhibition halls of the museum are still closed for renovation work and replacement of exhibits, and are expected to re-open at the end of 2016.

Tickets priced at $24 (front stalls) and $32 (stalls) are available at the Hong Kong Space Museum Box Office and URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk).
