Outreach Music Interest Courses open for applications with new courses catering for different needs

     The Outreach Music Interest Courses organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) are now open for applications. Over 100 courses, ranging from Chinese and Western musical instrument classes to diverse music workshops, offer a wide variety of choices for applicants of various ages. The courses will be held from September 2016 to January 2017.

     A new course, ˇ§Multi-genre Music Series: Being a Healthy Musician - Prevention of Musculoskeletal Disordersˇ¨, will introduce participants to the benefits derived from playing musical instruments in the prevention and treatment of muscle and bone strains. Another new course, ˇ§Music Appreciation Series: Musicals around the World - From New York, London to Asiaˇ¨, will cover the development of musicals in Europe, the United States and Asia and the appreciation of well-known musicals, as well as introducing renowned composers and performers of musicals from different periods. People aged 15 or above are welcome to join these courses for a fee of $270 per course.

     Regular workshop series include those for the ocarina, harmonica, ukulele, classical guitar, keyboard playing, classical vocal singing, as well as Western music theory (Grades 1 and 2) and aural training. The ensemble training series covers Chinese musical instruments, Western orchestral instruments, Western strings, flute, saxophone and the newly added classical guitar. The course fees range from $270 to $675.

     The Outreach Music Interest Courses also provide basic training on the xiao, liuyeqin, zhong-ruan, pipa, yangqin, zheng, dizi, erhu, clarinet, saxophone, flute, trumpet, percussion (glockenspiel and practice pad), violin, viola and cello. The course fee is $900. Most of these courses offer "Adult and Teenager Classes" and "Children Classes" to cater for participants of different ages.

     All courses are conducted in small groups in Cantonese and will be held at different venues throughout Hong Kong, namely the Hong Kong Cultural Centre, Sha Tin Town Hall, Tsuen Wan Town Hall, Sheung Wan Civic Centre, Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre, Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre, Tai Po Civic Centre, Kwai Tsing Theatre, Ko Shan Theatre, Yuen Long Theatre, Hong Kong Central Library and the Music Office's music centres in Wan Chai, Mong Kok, Kwun Tong, Sha Tin and Tsuen Wan.

     Online applications are now available at the Music Office's website www.lcsd.gov.hk/musicoffice. Course prospectuses and application forms are also available at various performance venues of the LCSD and music centres of the Music Office. The deadline for applications is July 25. Oversubscribed courses will be processed by ballot. For courses not fully taken up after the first round of application, places will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis from August 18.
