The following is issued on behalf of the Legislative Council Secretariat:

The Legislative Council (LegCo) Panel on Development conducted a site visit today (June 21) to the Sha Tin Water Treatment Works to better understand the water treatment and water quality monitoring processes of the Water Supplies Department (WSD).

Accompanied by representatives of the Development Bureau and WSD, Members were briefed on the water treatment processes and the operation of the water quality monitoring systems.  Members learnt that the quality of water is closely monitored by means of chemical, bacteriological and biological examinations of water samples taken from treatment works and throughout the supply system.  They also expressed to the Government that more information should be disseminated to the public about the water resources management measures in Hong Kong.

Members then observed the control room, water treatment facilities and laboratories at the water treatment works.  They took the opportunity to obtain more information on the procedures and technology to ensure that water samples complied with the Guidelines for Drinking-water Quality by the World Health Organization in respect of 92 water quality parameters, and other water quality targets.

Members who participated in the visit included the Chairman of the Panel on Development, Mr Tony Tse; Dr Helena Wong, who is a Panel member; as well as Mr Gary Fan, who is a non-Panel member.
