CEDD awards consultancy agreement for Tung Chung New Town Extension (East) (with photo)
**********************************************************

     The Civil Engineering and Development Department today (June 16) signed a consultancy agreement with AECOM Asia Company Limited for detailed design and construction supervision for the Tung Chung New Town Extension (East) project.

     The project includes:

1. reclamation for about 130 hectares of land (including construction of associated seawalls and eco-shorelines) using the non-dredged reclamation method for development of Tung Chung East and a primary distributor road (Road P1);
2. infrastructure works;
3. new cycle tracks connecting to the existing cycle track network;
4. landscaping, reprovisioning and ancillary works;
5. environmental mitigation measures; and
6. associated site investigation works.

     The consultancy agreement costs $138 million with a duration of about 10 years.

     The Government commissioned a feasibility study for the Tung Chung New Town Extension in 2012 to review the remaining development potential of the Tung Chung New Town. With the public views collected during a three-stage public engagement exercise as reference, a development proposal for the Tung Chung New Town Extension was formulated. It covers the areas on the eastern and western flanks of the existing New Town, namely Tung Chung East and Tung Chung West. These two newly extended areas will provide about 49,400 residential flats, accommodating a population of about 144,400. The first population intake in the newly extended areas is targeted for 2023 at the earliest.

     Details of the Tung Chung New Town Extension Study are available at www.tung-chung.hk/eng_index.html.
