**************************************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, visited the Sha Tin Water Treatment Works (WTW) today (June 13) to learn more about the work of the Water Supplies Department (WSD) and to take the opportunity to meet its staff.

Accompanied by the Permanent Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Thomas Chow, Mr Cheung first met with the Director of Water Supplies, Mr Enoch Lam, and the directorate staff. The WSD is responsible for monitoring and managing all facets of securing and maintaining fresh and salt water supplies throughout Hong Kong. The Sha Tin WTW, the largest WTW facility in Hong Kong with a capacity of about 1.23 million cubic metres per day, obtains its raw water from Plover Cove Reservoir, High Island Reservoir and Guangdong Province.

Later, in the Main Control Room of the Sha Tin WTW, Mr Cheung was briefed by staff on its operation. This includes round-the-clock monitoring of the water quality at various stages of water treatment and the use of an online water contamination monitoring system for real-time monitoring of raw Dongjiang water imported from Guangdong Province.

Mr Cheung then proceeded to the Mainland East Laboratory of the Water Science Division. He was briefed by chemists on the chemical, bacteriological and biological examinations they conduct with advanced instruments and technology in order to ensure the water quality throughout the supply system.

Before concluding his visit, Mr Cheung met the staff representatives of various grades at a tea gathering to exchange views on relevant departmental issues. He praised the efforts made by the staff members in serving the community and encouraged them to keep on making the best use of resources and technology to strive for continuous improvement in services.
