Cluster of Clostridium Difficile toxin cases in Pok Oi Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for Pok Oi Hospital made the following announcement today (June 1):

     Four patients (aged 77 to 95) of a female Medicine and Geriatrics Convalescence ward had presented with diarrhoea symptoms since May 3. Appropriate laboratory tests were arranged for the patients and their test results were positive for Clostridium Difficile toxin. One of the patients passed away on May 26 due to underlying illness, while the other three are being treated under isolation with stable condition.

     Infection control measures have already been stepped up according to established guidelines. All other patients in the ward concerned are under close surveillance.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
