Local soprano Francesca Chan to present art song lecture series
*********************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold an art song lecture series, to be presented in July and August by renowned local soprano Francesca Chan.

With demonstrations of Italian, French, Russian, German, English and Chinese art songs, the lectures will cover the topics "Singing skills and interpretations", "Poetic lyrics and its rhythm", "The importance of piano accompaniment", "Characteristics of various languages in singing", "Difference between art songs and opera arias" and "Summary of the art of song", scheduled for 7.30pm on July 6, 13, 20 and 27 and August 3 and 10 (Wednesdays) at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Space Museum.

Francesca Chan's musical odyssey began in Hong Kong at an early age with piano lessons that continued throughout her secondary school studies in the United Kingdom. Chan's performance in the listening and singing test under a piano examination was so remarkable that she was persuaded to take singing lessons. She returned to Hong Kong after graduating from the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, but went back to the Guildhall School for advanced training, and developed into an art song specialist, specialising in British songs, German lieder and French mélodies.

Chan has established herself as a professional performer and teacher and achieved a rare level of success for a singer from Hong Kong. She has enjoyed an international career, collaborating with eminent pianists such as Geoffrey Parsons, Graham Johnson, David Harper and Roger Vignoles, and performing at some of the most prestigious venues including Wigmore Hall and the Royal Festival Hall in London and the Sydney Opera House.

The series will be conducted in Cantonese with special musical terms in English and other foreign languages. Tickets priced at $50 per lecture are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk).
