Contractors fined for violation of safety legislation

Chun Wo Construction and Engineering Company Limited, China Railway Group Limited and Tung Wo Engineering Co., Limited were fined $15,000, $15,000 and $30,000 respectively at Eastern Magistrates' Courts today (May 9) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.
The case involved a fatal accident that occurred on October 29, 2012, in Wan Chai. During the concreting of a sewage outfall pipe, an inflated pipe plug inside the pipe suddenly ruptured, resulting in an inrush of water and causing the death of one worker and injuries to two.
