SCS visits Sha Tin District (with photos)
*****************************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, visited Sha Tin District today (May 6) to meet with young people and elderly residents there. He also met with members of the Sha Tin District Council to gain an overview of the district and learn more about issues of community concern.

Accompanied by the District Officer (Sha Tin), Ms Cora Ho, Mr Cheung first visited Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) and was briefed by the Provost, Professor Gilbert Fong, on the facilities and development of the college. The HSMC maintains close ties with the Sha Tin community by taking part in the cultural research programme on indigenous villages in the district as well as by encouraging its students to participate in community affairs.

Youth activity is one of the major initiatives in Sha Tin District. Mr Cheung met with members of the Sha Tin Youth Service Corps and students of HSMC, who shared their experiences of participating in last year's summer post-secondary school students internship programme supported by the Civil Service Bureau as well as exchange programmes to the Mainland and overseas. Founded by Sha Tin District Office in 2011, the Service Corps now has about 450 members. It encourages young people to explore their own potential, care for people in need, learn more about their district and form networks so as to build a harmonious community.

Mr Cheung then met with the Chairman, Mr Ho Hau-cheung, and other members of Sha Tin District Council to get a picture of the overall development of the district and hear about various issues of concern.

Building an age-friendly community is one of the key themes of this year's Policy Address. Before concluding his visit, Mr Cheung toured the Jockey Club Centre for Positive Ageing and visited elderly people living and attending activities there. Situated in the New Territories East, the centre is dedicated to providing services for people with dementia. Sha Tin District will remain committed to promoting age-friendly measures in the years ahead.
