Maritime safety law updates proposed
************************************

To implement the latest requirements of two international conventions of the International Maritime Organization on maritime safety, the Government plans to introduce a new regulation and revise three existing regulations under the Merchant Shipping (Safety) Ordinance.

A spokesperson for the Transport and Housing Bureau said today (May 6) that the four pieces of subsidiary legislation to be introduced are to implement the latest requirements under the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea and the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea.

The legislative amendments cover the carriage of cargoes for seagoing vessels and the latest safety measures for high-speed craft, as well as the latest navigational signals that have been introduced arising from advanced technologies.

The spokesperson said, "We have consulted various stakeholders and they support our proposals."

The legislative proposals were gazetted today and will be tabled at the Legislative Council on May 11 for negative vetting.
