A 44-year-old male person in custody attacked a correctional officer at Tai Lam Correctional Institution yesterday (May 4).
At 6.03pm, the person in custody suddenly became emotional when taking medicine at the centre hospital. He slammed a plastic jar nearby which then hit a correctional officer. Staff called for reinforcements immediately. The assailant was subsequently escorted away from the scene.
After examination and treatment provided by the doctor at the centre hospital, the correctional officer is now in a satisfactory condition, while the assailant sustained no injury.
The Correctional Services Department has referred the incident to the Police for investigation.
The person in custody has a history of mental illness and was sentenced for the offence of burglary.
