Urgent appeal for blood due to low inventories (with photo)
***********************************************************

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

The Hong Kong Red Cross Blood Transfusion Service (BTS) spokesman today (April 29) said that due to the continuing high demand for blood by public hospitals and the utilisation of a considerable amount of blood in a number of major operations recently, blood inventories have reached an alarming level. The BTS appeals to members of the public to donate blood and hopes that at least 1,100 enthusiastic donors will come forward to donate blood daily to ensure normal blood supply.
As a token of the BTS' appreciation, successful donors from April 29 to May 8 will be presented with a "multi-purpose phone stand"(inset) on a first-come-first-served basis while stocks last.

Anyone who is aged between 16 and 60 (donation is possible up to the age of 70 if predetermined conditions are met), weighs over 41 kilograms and is in good health is eligible to give blood. Male and female adult donors aged 18 or above can donate every 75 days and every 105 days respectively. Youths aged between 16 and 17 can donate every 150 days.

For the location and service hours of donor centres, please call 2710 1234 or visit the BTS website www.ha.org.hk/rcbts.
