Keung Kee Construction Limited and Win Glory Investments Limited were fined $60,000 and $90,000 respectively at Kwun Tong Magistrates' Courts today (April 25) for violation of the Factories and Industrial Undertakings Ordinance and the Construction Sites (Safety) Regulations. The prosecutions were launched by the Labour Department.
The case involves a fatal accident that occurred on March 31 last year at a construction site in Tseung Kwan O, where a worker was killed by the falling counterweight of a disused lift while the lift shaft wall enclosing it was being dismantled.
The Labour Department reminds contractors/proprietors of the trade to establish and implement safe systems of work for the dismantling of disused lifts and the associated lift shafts and provide adequate information, training, instruction and supervision to the workers involved in the dismantling work.
