The latest exhibition at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre, entitled "Past and Present: Photos of Historic Buildings in Hong Kong", is being staged until June 9. Through the exhibition, visitors can reflect on the changing relationships between the communities and historic buildings over different eras.
Organised by the Antiquities and Monuments Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, the exhibition features photos of more than 30 historic buildings in the past and present which were taken from similar angles, allowing visitors to observe the changes in their exteriors.
Historic buildings are cultural icons that embody not only the architectural characteristics of a society, but also its development and the spirit of humanity that distinguished it in a particular era. As Hong Kong has grown and prospered over the past centuries, a variety of buildings have conveyed the building features of different ethnic groups in Hong Kong since the Qing dynasty, the integration of southern Chinese and Western architectural styles, and the changes from traditional to modern construction techniques.
Old buildings which could be conserved in the process of urban development, no matter whether they are still in their original uses or revitalised for other functions, continue to bear witnesses to the eras in which they were constructed and to their long-standing relationship with the local community.
