The Government announced today (April 22) the appointments of Dr Lau Chi-pang as Chairman of the newly formed Advisory Committee on Built Heritage Conservation (ACBHC) and 14 non-official members for a term of two years with effect from May 15, 2016.
Commenting on the appointments, the Secretary for Development, Mr Paul Chan, said, "The 2016 Policy Address announced the setting up of the Built Heritage Conservation Fund with an initial funding of $500 million earmarked. The ACBHC is formed to advise the Government on the operation of the Fund.
"The ACBHC comprises members from different fields and professions including architecture, historical research, social enterprise, engineering, surveying, town planning, finance, business and private practitioners of built heritage conservation. I am confident that this composition will bring in fresh ideas to the Committee. I also look forward to working with it on issues relating to built heritage conservation in Hong Kong."
The ACBHC will assess new applications and monitor existing projects under the Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme (Revitalisation Scheme), monitor the operation of the Financial Assistance for Maintenance Scheme, and advise the Government on funding support for public education, community involvement and publicity activities, academic research, consultancy and technical studies relating to the conservation of built heritage.
With the Built Heritage Conservation Fund covering the Revitalisation Scheme amongst other things, the work of the existing Advisory Committee on Revitalisation of Historic Buildings (ACRHB) will be included under the ACBHC when its current term expires on May 14, 2016.
Mr Chan expressed his utmost gratitude to the Chairman of the ACRHB, Mr Bernard Chan, for his contribution to the Committee over the past eight years. He also thanked the nine non-official members for their remarkable service in the work of the ACRHB.
"Under Mr Bernard Chan's outstanding leadership and guidance, the ACRHB has contributed significantly to the furtherance of the revitalisation of historic buildings in Hong Kong. In particular, the valuable advice tendered by him and the Committee has been conducive to the smooth implementation of the Revitalisation Scheme, which has become the flagship programme in our built heritage conservation portfolio," Mr Chan said.
