Alice Theatre Laboratory to perform Heiner Müller's play "Hamletmachine"
*********************************************************

Alice Theatre Laboratory will perform Heiner Müller's play "Hamletmachine" in June. Müller has been regarded as the greatest theatre poet after Samuel Beckett.

"Hamletmachine" portrays anew Shakespeare's Hamlet, Prince of Denmark. There have been reincarnations of Hamlet in history. What he is now struggling with is no longer his hatred towards his unfaithful mother who murdered his father, nor his existence and death, but the never-ending brutal power.

The director of "Hamletmachine" is Andrew Chan, winner of Best Director at the Hong Kong Drama Awards and Hong Kong Theatre Libre. The cast includes Chan Shui-yu, Yuen Wai-ying, Cecilia Chan, Candy Chan, Eric Leung, Cheng Ka-chun, Chau Ka-fai and Chan Wai-chung.

Alice Theatre Laboratory is devoted to experimental performances. Its past productions, including "Seven Boxes Possessed of Kafka" (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Beijing and Macau), "Fear and Misery of the Third Reich" (Hong Kong and Beijing), "Beckett on Stage II: Reminiscence & Traces", "The Maids", "1001 Nights of Pasolini", "One Hundred Years of Solitude" (Hong Kong and Beijing), "Endgame" (Hong Kong and Shanghai), "Once the Muse Speaks" and "Ten Utterances from Dreams" (Hong Kong, Shanghai, Taipei and Beijing), were critically acclaimed and were nominated for and received a number of awards at the Hong Kong Drama Awards and Hong Kong Theatre Libre. CNNGo praised Alice Theatre Laboratory as one of the five most watchable Hong Kong theatre companies.

Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Hamletmachine" by Alice Theatre Laboratory (to be performed in Cantonese) will be staged at 8pm on June 10 and 11 (Friday and Saturday) and at 3pm on June 11 and 12 (Saturday and Sunday) at the Theatre of Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre.
