********************************

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Mr Clement Cheung, departed for Beijing this morning (April 5) for a three-day visit.

This is Mr Cheung's first visit to Beijing since assuming the post of the Secretary for the Civil Service in July last year. During his visit, Mr Cheung will call on the Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council. He will also visit the Chinese Academy of Governance (CAG), Tsinghua University, Peking University and China Foreign Affairs University (CFAU) to facilitate exchange and co-operation on civil service training.

Mr Cheung will meet with Hong Kong people now working and studying in Beijing to learn more about their daily life and present situation.

This afternoon, Mr Cheung will visit the CAG and the CFAU. Since 1999, the Civil Service Bureau has commissioned the CAG to organise national studies programmes to deepen participants' understanding of current policies and development on the Mainland as well as to enhance networking between participants and Mainland officials. The CFAU has organised courses on international relations and foreign affairs for Hong Kong civil servants since 2004 which covers China's foreign affairs, protocol and other related topics.

Mr Cheung will return to Hong Kong on Thursday night (April 7).
