Hong Kong bans import of poultry meat and products from Gyunggi Province, Korea
********************************************************

The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department announced today (March 29) that in view of a notification from the Korean authorities about an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in Gyunggi Province of Korea, it has banned the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from the area concerned with immediate effect to protect public health in Hong Kong.

A CFS spokesman said that in view of the avian influenza outbreaks in Korea, the import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from Korea to Hong Kong had been banned since May 7, 2014. The import ban was lifted on March 7 this year. Since then, no import of poultry meat and products (including poultry eggs) from Gyunggi Province of Korea has been noted.

"The CFS has contacted the Korean authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the World Organisation for Animal Health on avian influenza outbreaks in the country. Appropriate action will be taken in response to the development of the situation," the spokesman said.
