***********************************************

The annual spectacular Hong Kong Flower Show opened at Victoria Park today (March 11) with more than 350 000 flowers on display, including 60 000 pots of the theme flower Antirrhinum majus, commonly known as snapdragon. Featuring "Blossoms in Vivid Art 2016" as its main theme, the show will run for 10 days until March 20, and is one of the events in the second batch of 10 highlight events under the "Appreciate Hong Kong" Campaign.

Officiating at today's opening ceremony were the wife of the Chief Executive, Mrs Regina Leung; the President of the Legislative Council, Mr Jasper Tsang; the Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Lau Kong-wah; the Hong Kong Jockey Club's Executive Director, Charities and Community, Mr Leong Cheung; Miss Hong Kong 2015, Miss Louisa Mak, and the Director of Leisure and Cultural Services, Ms Michelle Li.

A vibrant carpet of flowers stretches from the Sugar Street entrance to the showground stage, with a floral display themed on four Chinese arts - the qin, Chinese chess, calligraphy and painting. Elements of Western music and chess are also included to signify cultural diversity.
Welcoming visitors at the Sugar Street entrance is a beautiful garden display inspired by the works of the famous 19th century Impressionist, Claude Monet, and his beautiful garden in France.

The entrance at Hing Fat Street is equally attractive, featuring colourful floral art walks divided into two parts, one modelled on European Renaissance classical gardens while the other is lined with trees and decorated with flowers.

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has created a spectacular exhibit entitled "Beautiful Hong Kong in a Fusion of Flowers and Art", with a "tree of life" at the centre symbolising a perpetual cycle of blooming and fruition, representing the creativity of Hong Kong people.

A beautiful tulip display with around 14 000 flowers in a variety of colours provides an opportunity for photo-taking, while a display area featuring common species of herbs is both aromatic and educational.

Other main attractions include an "Appreciate Hong Kong" Campaign display with photo-taking features; a spectacular mosaiculture display showcasing the beauty of nature and the animal kingdom; an exhibition blending the elegance of floral motifs with women's cheongsams; a Brand Hong Kong floral wall made up of colourful plants; another floral wall themed as "Road to Rio, Support Hong Kong Athletes", and attractive landscape displays by local, Mainland and overseas organisations.

A variety of educational and recreational fringe activities will also be held for the enjoyment of visitors of all ages.
