LCSD's Great Music to return with renowned artists and orchestras (with photos)

     Starting in April, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) will present "Great Music 2016", offering a number of recitals and concerts by world-class artists and orchestras.

Encore Series: Violin Recital by Joshua Bell

Concert Hall, Hong Kong Cultural Centre
8pm, April 17 (Sunday)
Tickets: $250 - $650

     One of the most celebrated violinists of his era, Joshua Bell will collaborate for a recital with pianist Alessio Bax. The programme will include Vitali's "Chaconne in G Minor", Beethoven's "Violin Sonata No. 9 in A" and Ravel's "Violin Sonata No. 2 in G". Other works will be announced by Bell during the performance.

     At age 14, Bell came to national attention in the United States at his debut with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra. His Carnegie Hall debut, an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a notable recording contract further confirmed his virtuosity. Bell has recorded more than 40 CDs, garnering Grammy, Mercury, Gramophone and Echo Klassik awards.

     The remarkable Philadelphia Orchestra will come to Hong Kong with two performances in May under the baton of its Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin. The first concert will feature Brahms' "Symphony No. 2" and Rimsky-Korsakov's "Scheherazade", while the programme of the second concert will include Beethoven's "String Quartet in F minor, 'Serioso'" (arranged by Mahler) and Bruckner's "Symphony No. 4 in E-flat, 'Romantic'".

     The Philadelphia Orchestra is one of the world's leading orchestras, renowned for its distinctive sound, its keen ability to capture the hearts and imaginations of audiences, and its legacy of innovation in music-making. Nˆmzet-Sˆmguin is an inspiring leader and one of the most exciting talents of his generation. He is Musical America's Artist of the Year 2016 and has been praised as "phenomenal" by The New York Times.

Encore Series: Piano Recital by Arcadi Volodos

     Russian pianist Arcadi Volodos' boundless virtuosity and unique sense of phrasing, colour and poetry have made him an ideal "narrator" of Romantic musical tales. Since his New York debut in 1996, Volodos has performed throughout the world in recital and with many of the most eminent orchestras and conductors. In his Hong Kong concert, he will perform Schumann's "Papillons", Brahms' "Three Intermezzos" and Schubert's "Piano Sonata No. 20 in A".

     German violinist Julia Fischer, the Artist of the Year at the 2007 Gramophone Awards, is recognised worldwide for possessing a talent of uncommon ability ¡V her "soulful poise and beautifully produced tone" (The Telegraph) combined with rare "technical brilliance" (The Guardian) make her one of the most sought after soloists today. She will collaborate with pianist Martin Helmchen for a recital in October featuring Dvořák's "Sonatina for Violin in G", Schubert's "Sonatina for Violin in D" and Brahms' "Violin Sonata No. 3 in D Minor".
