***********************************************************

The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) today (March 3), with the assistance of the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD), completed the salvage of wreckage from the accident on February 27 involving a Zlin Z242L light aircraft with the registration B-LUR. A preliminary report on the accident will be released this month.

"Over the past few days, the CAD's accident investigation team has been conducting a multi-pronged accident investigation. With the assistance of the CEDD, divers were sent to take photos of the wreckage, which was lying 16 metres underwater, for evidence gathering. A feasible plan to salvage the wreckage was also devised. Complemented by factors including wind and water currents, the salvage operation was completed successfully today," a spokesman for the CAD said.

"The CAD's accident investigation team immediately took measures to preserve the recovered wreckage. Preliminary examination of the wreckage was also conducted. The wreckage will be sent to the Accident Investigation Centre at the CAD Headquarters for study and analysis in detail. The purpose of the investigation is to determine the circumstances and the possible causes of the accident in order to prevent future recurrence," he added.

The CAD will issue a preliminary report on the accident by this month.

The department appeals to anyone who witnessed the aircraft accident or has any information/visual materials to offer to contact the Chief Inspector of Accidents by letter, facsimile, telephone, or email to the Chief Inspector of Accidents (address: Civil Aviation Department Headquarters, 1 Tung Fai Road, Hong Kong International Airport, Lantau, Hong Kong; Telephone: 2910 6088; Facsimile: 2362 4250; or Email: khso@cad.gov.hk).
