Applications open for 2016 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp

     The 2016 Hong Kong Youth Music Camp, organised by the Music Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, is accepting applications from young and qualified local, overseas and Mainland musicians aged 9 to 25. The camp will be held in July and August at Sai Kung Outdoor Recreation Centre.

     For local campers, the camp duration will be from July 31 to August 6 (Camp A) and from August 7 to 13 (Camp B). For non-local campers, the camp duration will be from July 31 to August 7 (Camp A) and from August 7 to 14 (Camp B). The music groups are Chinese Orchestra, Junior String Orchestra and Children's Choir for Camp A, and Symphony Orchestra, Junior Chinese Orchestra and Symphonic Band for Camp B.

     The fee is $1,375 for local campers and $1,980 for non-local campers. To encourage international music exchanges, Parsons Music, the event sponsor, will offer scholarships for non-local musicians with excellent musical standards to join the camps.

     Well-known musicians from different countries will conduct orchestral/band/choral training and young musicians from local, overseas and the Mainland will explore the wonderful world of music in a green setting.

     Conductors at this year's Music Camp will include the Resident Conductor of the China National Orchestra and Guest Conductor of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra, Liu Sha; experienced Taiwanese string instruments educator and former Violin Professor of the Taiwan University of Arts, Wong Fu-tong; founder and Conductor of Sydney Children's Choir and founder and Artistic Director of Gondwana Choirs of Australia, Lyn Williams; former Director of the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra and Artistic Consultant for a number of orchestras in the Asia Pacific region, Chen Tscheng-hsiung; Conductor of the Shanghai Chinese Orchestra and former Assistant Conductor of the Singapore Chinese Orchestra, Yao Shen-shen; and Associate Professor of Music at the Samford University in Birmingham, United States (US) and member of the renowned Sotto Voce Quartet (US), Demondrae Thurman.

     In addition, masterclasses and sharing sessions will be arranged for campers to hone their musical skills. Speakers will include the Percussion Associate Principal of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, Luk Kin-bun; renowned erhu performer, Yao Shen-shen; Assistant Professor of Music of the Chiayi University in Taiwan, Lin Shin-wei; trumpet instructor of Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts and Hong Kong Baptist University, Fung Ka-hing; Associate Concertmaster of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and first violinist of the Romer String Quartet, Cheung Man-yui; cellist of the Hong Kong Sinfonietta and the Romer String Quartet, Eric Yip; and Hong Kong young-generation pianist, Wong Ka-jeng.

     Campers and choir members will participate in two public concerts to be held in August to showcase their achievements. Guest erhu soloist Zhang Chong-xue will perform with the Chinese Orchestra in concert.
     
     A day camp entitled "Upbeat! A Music Day Tour" will also be held every Monday to Friday from August 1 to 12 at a fee of $72 per person per day. A concessionary rate of $53 will apply to children, full-time students, senior citizens aged 60 and above and people with disabilities. Organisations, families and other groups of individuals are welcome to visit rehearsals, attend mini-concerts and take part in music games. Day camp participants will also be able to use various recreational facilities at the camp.

The deadlines for application are April 1 for the residential camps and May 30 for the day camps.
