Further relief for fish farmers affected by massive fish deaths
*********************************************************

Further relief will be provided to mariculturists adversely affected by the massive death of cultured fish due to red tides earlier, a spokesman for the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) said today (February 23).

The spokesman said, "Having obtained the consent of the Emergency Relief Fund Committee, the AFCD will provide a special grant of up to $7,260 in addition to the primary producer grants under the Emergency Relief Fund (ERF) to eligible mariculturists.

"Disbursement of the special grant to eligible applicants for primary producer grants will start tomorrow (February 24)."

Since last December, there have been massive deaths of cultured fish related to the occurrence of red tides and harmful algae in the waters extending from Tolo Harbour to Long Harbour. Arrangements have been made for the affected mariculturists at Yim Tin Tsai, Yim Tin Tsai (East), Yung Shue Au, Lo Fu Wat, Sham Wan, Tap Mun and Kau Lau Wan fish culture zones to apply for assistance from the ERF.

The spokesman said, "The department has approved 209 applications for ERF involving some $1.37 million of primary producer grants."
