************************************************************

The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has opened the Urban Lunar New Year Lantern Carnival at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (HKCC) Piazza tonight (February 22) in celebration of the Spring Lantern Festival. The carnival promises a festive mood for visitors with its spectacular lantern displays and a variety of entertainment. The event is also one of the activities under the "Appreciate Hong Kong" Campaign.

Colourful lanterns are lighting up the piazza, providing a popular spot for photo-taking and creating a joyful ambience. One of the lantern displays is "Kingdom of Vigorous Monkeys", featuring monkeys playing on the Flower and Fruit Mountain and symbolising energy and agility in the Year of the Monkey. This lantern display will continue until February 28.

Another highlight is the traditional lantern display "The Golden Monkey Celebrating the Lantern Festival", created by local paper craft masters as part of the "Hong Kong Intangible Cultural Heritage - Exhibition on Traditional Craftsmanship of Lantern Making". Running until February 24, the display illuminates the story of the "Journey to the West", in which Tang Sanzang, his three disciples and the White Dragon-horse travel west to acquire knowledge about Buddhism.

Carnival-goers can also enjoy a series of performances and activities including the spectacular ethnic song and dance programme "China's TibetĄDTashi Delek" by the Tibet Arts Troupe, demonstrations of Chinese folk crafts such as the making of Foshan Qiuse artefacts, Nanhai rattan weaving, wood carving and lion head crafting, a Chinese music ensemble, a dragon dance parade, puppet show, an origami workshop, a lantern quiz corner and more.
