Transcript of remarks by CE and S for S (with photo/video)
**********************************************************

Following is the transcript of remarks by the Chief Executive, Mr C Y Leung, and the Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, at a media session at the ground floor lobby of the Office of the Chief Executive today (February 9):

Chief Executive: There was a riot in Mong Kok in the early hours of today. A few hundred mobs attacked police officers and the media in Mong Kok. They damaged police cars and public properties, committed acts of arson, threw bricks and other objects at police officers, including those who had already been injured and were lying on the ground, seriously jeopardising the safety of police officers and other people at the site. I believe the public can see for themselves from TV news reports the seriousness of the situation. The SAR Government strongly condemns such violent acts, the police will apprehend the mobs and bring them to justice. Also I send my regards to police officers and members of the media who were injured in the riot.

Reporter: ... and the Police have said that mobs organised that. Do you agree with those ...?

Secretary for Security: As what the Police have said there're indications that they are organised activities. The Police are still investigating the case. They'll take all efforts to arrest those suspects.

Reporter: Was it proper to fire shots here?

Secretary for Security: I think everyone of us have seen what happened on the TV screen. Police officers were knocked down on the ground and were further attacked. So, other police officers have to take all necessary actions to keep the peace.

Reporter: Mr Leung, what would be the direct reason behind the escalating chaos scenes in Hong Kong? Is it the general sense of dissatisfaction towards the Government? Or what would be the reason behind the protests in your ...?

Chief Executive: I think you have to ask those people who appeared to be organisers behind this riot.

Reporter: What about the Government¡¦s position? How do you analyse the situation?

Chief Executive: Our position is the same position as the Police, we enforce the laws of Hong Kong.
