Update on cluster of Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci cases in New Territories West Cluster

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson for New Territories West Cluster (NTWC) gave the following update today (February 5) regarding two clusters of patients confirmed as having Vancomycin Resistant Enterococci (VRE) in a male Medicine and Geriatrics Rehabilitation ward in Tuen Mun Hospital and a female Medicine and Geriatrics Convalescence ward in Pok Oi Hospital:

     The two hospitals have performed contact tracing in accordance with the prevailing infection control guidelines and confirmed two more patients (a man aged 64 and a woman aged 79) were VRE carriers. The male patient is being treated under isolation with stable condition while the female patient had been discharged.

     NTWC will continue the enhanced infection control measures and closely monitor the situation of the wards. The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up.
