LCSD to present lectures on Chaozhou music appreciation

     As part of its Lingnan Music Series, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will present the "Chaozhou Music Appreciation Lectures" in March.

     In the two lectures, speaker Dr Daniel Ng will give an overview of guzheng and string ensemble music of the Chaozhou and Hakka regions with discussions on the melodic structure, modes and characteristics of the genres. Dr Ng will also analyse the similarities and differences among these musical genres in terms of their styles and expressions.

     Details of the lectures are as follows:

March 3 (Thursday)
"The Tranquility and Nuances of Chaozhou and Hakka Guzheng Music"

March 10 (Thursday)
"The Nourishment and Content Expressed in Chaozhou Xianshi and Hakka Han Music"

     Dr Ng studied musical composition at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and subsequently at the University of Hong Kong. He also undertook research in Chinese music and teacher education and obtained a doctoral degree from the University of New South Wales, Australia. He has published a CD-ROM entitled "Learning Chaozhou Xianshi Music" and co-authored a book entitled "Huang Zi Choral Literature Collection", and has also written a number of articles on music education for various academic journals and books.

     The two lectures (in Cantonese) will be held at 7.30pm at AC1, Level 4, Administration Building, Hong Kong Cultural Centre. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
