Acclaimed Chaozhou-Shantou musician Wang Peiyu to perform concert in March

     Acclaimed musician Wang Peiyu from the Chaozhou-Shantou region will stage a concert to delight music lovers in March.

     Wang and his Xianshi Xiyue Workshop of Shantou have gained a reputation as "the new generation in classic xianshi music". On top of performing pieces from traditional Chaozhou xianshi music, guzheng music and dizi classics, the ensemble will also collaborate with a Chaozhou opera singer to present classic Chaozhou opera in this concert. Apart from performing solo, Wang Peiyu will also take to the stage with renowned musicians including Lin Yingping, Xie Shengyi, Xu Wang and Yu Qiongying of the Xianshi Xiyue Workshop of Shantou. The programme will include "Jing-Chun-Luo", "Wild Geese on the Sandbank", "Liu Qingniang", "The Pink Lotus" and "The Snow Geese Fly South".

     Wang Peiyu is a renowned musician in the musical genre of the Chaozhou-Shantou region, generally known as Chaozhou music. A National Class One composer, he is currently a Research Fellow and Artistic Director of the Shantou City Arts Research Centre. He is also a member of the Chinese Musicians Association; a Visiting Professor of the Chinese Instruments Department of the China Conservatory of Music, Taiwan University of Arts and Tainan University of the Arts; Artistic Adviser to the Guangdong Han Music Research Society; and Vice-chairman of the Shantou Musicians' Association.

     The Xianshi Xiyue Workshop of Shantou headed by Wang Peiyu was established by the Shantou City Arts Research Centre under the co-ordination and guidance of the Administration of Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publications of Shantou.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Concert by Wang Peiyu and Xianshi Xiyue Workshop of Shantou" is one of the attractions of the Lingnan Music Series. The concert will be held at 8pm on March 13 (Sunday) at the Theatre of the Yau Ma Tei Theatre. Tickets priced at $160 and $240 are now available at URBTIX (www.urbtix.hk).      A demonstration talk entitled "The Art of Chaozhou Xianshi" (in Cantonese) will be held at 3pm on March 12 (Saturday) at the Theatre of the Jao Tsung-I Academy. The speaker will be Wang Peiyu. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
