*****************************************

More than 500 people participated in the annual 10 kilometres Distance Run organised by the Correctional Services Department (CSD) at the Plover Cove Reservoir's main dam in Tai Po today (January 23).

The Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Yau Chi-chiu, officiated at the launch ceremony at 9am.

The 10 kilometres Distance Run was one of the events held at the first Sports Meet of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau Correctional Officers in 2001. Since then it has become the department's annual activity to promote a healthy and balanced lifestyle for staff members by encouraging them to take part in sports activities.

In addition to serving and retired correctional services officers, also taking part in today's event were representatives from other disciplined services, the Water Supplies Department and Hong Kong St John Ambulance, as well as students from local tertiary education institutions and teenagers. Staff members from the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, Architectural Services Department, Hospital Authority, Department of Health and the secondary school students participated in the run for the first time.

More than 20 students from three secondary schools took part in event for the first time. Aged from 12 and 18 years, they took part in the 2.5km event. The aim is to encourage the teenagers to experience the atmosphere of CSD's sports activities and team spirit, and to help them learn more about the department's work.
