Cluster of Drug Resistant Acinetobacter cases in Shatin Hospital

The following is issued on behalf of the Hospital Authority:

     The spokesperson of Shatin Hospital made the following announcement today (January 12):

     Ten patients (aged 72 to 91) of a male medicine and geriatrics ward were confirmed to have Drug Resistant Acinetobacter since January 4. Eight patients are still hospitalised under isolation with stable condition. One patient has already been discharged and one patient passed away due to underlying disease.

     The following enhanced infection control measures have already been adopted:

1. Enhanced cleaning and disinfection of the ward concerned;
2. Applying stringent contact precautions, including dedicated use of clinical equipment for all patients in the ward concerned and enhanced hand hygiene;
3. Screening all patients in the ward;
4. Enhanced environmental sampling for monitoring;
5. Enhanced attention to contamination-prone procedures; and
6. Suspending admission to the ward.

     The cases have been reported to the Hospital Authority Head Office and the Centre for Health Protection for necessary follow-up. The hospital will continue to closely monitor the situation of the ward.
