Following is the transcript of remarks by the Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung, on the Labour Department's Construction Industry Recruitment Centre after officiating at the Centre's opening today (January 11):
This Construction Industry Recruitment Centre has a special function, in the particular sense that we really hope to bring about a culture change in recruitment and also in the employment pattern (of the construction industry) because up to now, they basically rely on personal connections. Now, we are talking about providing a platform, providing information and a database, and also providing a venue for employers and employees to get together particularly for recruitment purposes. So, we hope that this will provide a very useful platform. Also, this particular Centre is housed in the same building as the CIC (Construction Industry Council), which provides workers with training and also value-added services. So, we hope that this will provide a very convenient one-stop integrated service point for those looking for employment in the particular sector here. Also, we are targeting at ethnic minorities - that's why we will provide special services for them. We will target them and reach out to them in their particular areas.
