Operational event at Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station
**************************************************

An operational event at Ling Ao Nuclear Power Station (LNPS) was reported today (January 11) on the website of Daya Bay Nuclear Power Operations and Management Co Ltd (DNMC), a spokesperson for the Security Bureau said today.

Due to climate and tidal variations, a large amount of minute marine crustaceans gathered at the seawater intake of Unit 2 of LNPS on January 9, blocking the filtering screen drum at the intake and tripping two seawater intake pumps. The tripping triggered an automatic reactor protection signal which led to the safe shutdown of Unit 2. The operators took relevant measures to arrange for salvaging the crustaceans and cleaning up the screen drum. The reactor was restored to normal working conditions after the satisfactory completion of the said measures. The event was classified as a "Below Scale Licensing Operational Event" (i.e. "Level 0" event) on the International Nuclear and Radiological Event Scale of the International Atomic Energy Agency, and has no effect on the safe operation of the nuclear power station, the health of the workers, the nearby public or the environment. All nuclear generating units at the Daya Bay Nuclear Power Site remain in normal and stable operation.

The DNMC disseminates on its website (www.dnmc.com.cn) news pertaining to the operation and safety issues of both the Guangdong Nuclear Power Station and LNPS for the information of the general public. Details about this event can be viewed at the "operational events" section under the "nuclear and radiation safety information" webpage of the DNMC website.
