Guzheng recital by Qu Yun and Sun Zhuo to launch Nan Lian Garden Music Series

     Acclaimed guzheng virtuosi Qu Yun and Sun Zhuo will stage a guzheng duo recital in January next year to launch the Nan Lian Garden Music Series.

     The programme will include the guzheng duets "Autumn Moon in the Han Palace", "Fragrant Garden" and "Ode to Zheng". Guzheng solo performances by Qu Yun will include "Temple Fair on Xiang Mountain" and "Zhuan-Prelude to Plum Blossoms". Guzheng solo works to be performed by Sun Zhuo will include "Thoughts on an Autumn Evening", "Xuanban Tune" and "Lin Quan".

     Qu Yun is an iconic Shaanxi school zheng maestro and has earned a reputation as a "scholastic guzheng soloist". Qu is a professor and graduate students' instructor at the School of Music of Shaanxi Normal University and vice chairperson of the Shaanxi Qin Zheng Society. She has also served at the Research Institute for Ethnomusicology of the Xi'an Conservatory of Music and studied guzheng and ethnomusicology teaching.

     Sun Zhuo holds bachelor's and master's degrees in guzheng performance awarded by the Central Conservatory of Music, and graduated from the University of London with a doctoral degree in ethnomusicology. She is an assistant professor at the School of Music of Shaanxi Normal University. Sun has learnt to play guzheng with her mother Qu Yun since she was a child. She was admitted to the Central Conservatory of Music in 1994 and studied guzheng with renowned maestro and educator Li Meng.

     Presented by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department, "Guzheng Recital by Qu Yun and Sun Zhuo" will be held at 2.30pm and 7.30pm on January 23 (Saturday) at the Xiang Hai Xuan Multi-purpose Hall of the Nan Lian Garden.      A demonstration talk entitled "Development of Contemporary Shaanxi Zheng Music and Performances" (in Putonghua) will be held at 2.30pm on January 24 (Sunday) at the Lecture Hall of the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. Speakers will include Qu Yun and Sun Zhuo. Admission is free with limited seats available on a first-come, first-served basis.
