Elderly people to stage oral history theatre performance "Memories from the Island East" in January (with photos)
*********************************************************

The finale performance "Memories from the Island East", which is part of the Community Oral History Theatre Project - Eastern District, will be staged on January 16 and 30, 2016. More than 20 elderly participants who have received drama training will share with audience members the transformation of the district.

Co-organised by the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD), Chung Ying Theatre Company, the Hong Kong Society for the Aged and the Neighbourhood Advice-Action Council, the Community Oral History Theatre Project - Eastern District was launched in July 2014. Through organising a series of workshops, the project aims at gathering personal experiences and valuable recollections of the elderly in Eastern District, writing scripts based on the oral history collected, and providing an opportunity for the elderly to act out their stories on-stage.

"Memories from the Island East" tells the stories of Eastern District and its residents in the 1960s and 1970s, taking the audience to the tramline on King's Road and searching for historical traces of Hong Kong's old days. Over the years, North Point, a bustling Hong Kong district, has been the favoured place for new immigrants from Mainland China to settle, due to its affordable rents and convenient public transport. Home to many Fujianese and Shanghainese residents, North Point was formerly known as "Little Fujian" and "Little Shanghai". With Hong Kong's urban development, residents of Eastern District have come and gone over time.
