Hong Kong Customs detects suspected case of smuggling smartphones at Shenzhen Bay Control Point (with photo)

     Hong Kong Customs detected a suspected smuggling case at Shenzhen Bay Control Point yesterday (December 14) and seized a total of 350 smartphones worth about $2 million.

     Customs officers last night intercepted an outgoing private car at Shenzhen Bay Control Point for inspection. The smartphones were found concealed in a false compartment in the boot and underneath the carpet of the passenger seat. The 44-year-old male driver and 37-year-old male passenger were arrested. Investigation is ongoing.

     Under the Import and Export Ordinance, the maximum penalty for attempting to import or export unmanifested cargo is a fine of $2 million and imprisonment for seven years.
