Territory-wide operation to promote safe driving

     Police yesterday (December 8) concluded a one-week territory-wide operation to remind drivers of goods vehicles  the importance of safe driving.
 
     This was the latest in an ongoing series of operations conducted by the Police using enforcement to target moving traffic offences.
 
     The operation resulted in the arrest of five drivers and the issue of 183 verbal warnings, 82 summonses and 1,528 fixed penalty tickets. Ten good vehicles were suspected of violating safety requirements of the Road Traffic (Construction and Maintenance of Vehicles) Regulations and were sent to a Motor Vehicle Examiner Centre for further investigation.
 
     Among the 1,610 summonses and fixed penalty tickets issued, 384 were issued for speeding, 343 for failing to comply with traffic signs, 201 for using hand-held mobile phone while driving, 139 were for seatbelt-related offences, 84 for failing to comply with traffic light signals, 62 for construction and maintenance offences, and 56 for overloading.
