HK Film Archive's "Movie Talk" book series to introduce Peter Yung's works (with photo)
********************************************************

The Hong Kong Film Archive (HKFA) of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department will hold a book launch and screening for "Movie Talk Series 1 - The Dream of a Lost Traveller: The Films & Photography of Peter Yung" in December. "One Day in Locke" (1971), which was produced, directed and photographed by Peter Yung, will be shown.

The above activity will be held on December 13 (Sunday) at 2.30pm at the HKFA Cinema, to be followed by a seminar hosted by Law Kar and guest speaker Peter Yung in Cantonese. Admission to the film screening and the seminar is free on a first-come, first-served basis.

With a mission to acquire and preserve first-hand information on films, the HKFA is compiling materials from film seminars and various documents to publish the "Movie Talk" book series, enabling readers to understand the filmmaking process and expand their knowledge of films and cultural heritage. With Yung's generous donation of a wealth of material, the first volume collects the storyboards, screenplay and valuable artefacts of his feature film debut "The System" (1979), as well as interviews with the leading actor Bai Ying and the co-scriptwriter Dr Lee Sen, which reveal the meticulous behind-the-scenes planning for this Hong Kong New Wave masterpiece.

Director, photographer and producer Peter Yung started his career in photography and shooting investigative documentaries before his first foray into dramatic filmmaking. He then produced works of societal, cultural and historical value in the 1970s and '80s. The book features Yung's reminiscences on his complex creative career and a selection from his vast oeuvre of photography to showcase his versatility in using different media to fulfil his ambition in communicating, exploring and critiquing various cultural and intellectual topics.

Yung made his first documentary, "One Day in Locke", with the assistance of renowned Chinese-American film photographer James Wong Howe when he was in college. The film tells of the California Gold Rush in the 19th century and the migration of Chinese railroad labourers to the town of Locke. The chronicle of the townspeople's everyday life provides a glimpse of history through voiceover and Yung's poetic depiction of the essence of the town. The film is in English without subtitles and Chinese introductory notes will be provided.

The book, priced at $95 and in Chinese is now available for sale at the HKFA. For enquiries, please call 2739 2139 or visit www.lcsd.gov.hk/ce/CulturalService/HKFA/en_US/web/hkfa/publications_souvenirs/pub.html.
